Bring Your Books To Belize

Bring Your Books To Belize

November 13, 2009

You’re finishing up on packing for a flight to tropical Belize and it’s down to reading materials. Guidebook? Check. Beachchair reading (a.k.a. “trashy romance”) ?  Check. How about some top-notch literature, poetry, or a practical “how to” or reference book? Check!  Why? Sure, vacations can be a perfect time to finish a sidelined novel, but there’s another good reason to bring some quality books: donate them to the local libraries in Belize.

A recently-launched organization in Belize called “Angel Says Read” is making it easy by setting up strategic drop off locations in popular tourist spots like Ambergris Caye and the Tourism Village in Belize City.

According to the founder, “The libraries in Belize genuinely need books, and this is an easy way for tourists to help promote literacy”.  A member of the board of directors is quoted as saying “The bookshelf is not part of the living room culture; books are not readily available.”

Visit for more information, including a growing list of drop off locations. When preparing to bring books with you into Belize, be sure to inform yourself in advance about possible airline baggage fees, and Belize customs limitations.

I must say that we should add books to more and more libraries for future generations
