I've been to Quito, Ecuador (lived there for a few years) and recommend if you are planning to visit this site before its ready date, making a stop in Quito is a very good option that is not only relatively close to Machu Picchu, but also a great tourist area itself. After all, the Inca Empire was also spread throughout Ecuador.

I live in Cusco, and can report that although travel to MP is not presently possible, there is still plenty to do here. Cusco is a thriving city, many many sacred sites and ruins to visit, a happening music and night club scene, the could be the base camp for a trip into the jungle instead of trip to Machu piccu. The city of Cusco is just fine! Come anyway.
